This week in in English, we have continued our unit on speeches. We have focused on the different features of persuasive speeches including rhetorical questions and emotive language. Today we have tried to use some of these features to write our response to a speech.
In Maths, we have been learning more about decimals. We have looked at how hundredths are represented as fractions and decimals and on a place value chart. Today, we have looked at dividing a 1 or 2-digit number by 100.
In Science, the children enjoyed looking at food labels and finding the nutritional values of different foods. We have also looked at things needed to survive and be healthy and carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
Here is our topic web outlining what we will be learning this term:

This week we have explored the traditional Indian tale ‘The Tiger and the Jackal’. We learnt the words gullible, devious, smirking, pleading, enraged, duped. The children drew and wrote about the boy, the jungle where he lived, a new character who would help and a way for the boy and the jackal to get away when the tiger escaped. We are very much focusing on presentation at the moment. The children are working hard to put spaces between words and ensure letters are formed correctly (no reversals) and neatly.
Here’s a selection of some of their fantastic work:
In Phonics we have been consolidating Level 3 sounds and are due to start Level 4 next week. Level 4 will involve learning new tricky words but no further sounds. The focus is on learning to read longer words using Level 3 sounds. The children are currently working on blending in their heads and re-reading sentences after decoding to help improve their fluency.
Please remember to hear your child read as often as you can. The lucky dip box has been restocked and is ready for Tuesday next week. It would be amazing to see if we could get our highest number of winners yet after the bank holiday weekend.
In maths we have continued to consolidate our knowledge of numbers 11 to 20, working on recognising different representations, reading and ordering the numerals and matching numerals to the correct representation. Next week the children will be bringing home number cards to practice their numeral recognition and ordering skills or play missing number games which will also help develop their reasoning skills.
We also started our Brilliant Brushers scheme this week. It took a few days to get into the routine and have everyone fully participating but they are all now settled into our new regime. Well done everyone!
This week has also seen the opening of our outdoor role play area – the Garden Centre. (children’s choice) and we have also been exploring non-fiction books about India and talking about the things we would like to know more about. The children have also helped my travelling bear Barnaby pack today, for his trip to India. They are looking forward to seeing his photos over the next few weeks and hearing what he has found out for us.
Next week there will be no PE on Friday due to the non-uniform day for the coronation afternoon. We hope you all have a lovely Bank Holiday weekend and we will see you on Tuesday 2nd May.

Good afternoon,
What a week! I have been so impressed with the improvement in the children’s writing; they are making a huge effort with their vocabulary and phrasing as well as their presentation.
In maths, we have finished our unit on shape and next week we will be looking at problem solving. During geography, we continued exploring North and South America with a more in-depth look, creating videos about our understanding. In computing, we have started exploring how to create 3D models.
This week’s Golden Certificate winner is someone who has been trying really hard, has focused on their presentation and has helped children and staff across the school – congratulations Arthur.
I hope you enjoy your 3-day weekend, please keep encouraging the children to read at home,
Mr Reynolds

Another busy week comes to an end!
I’m really impressed by the improvements that the children are making in their reading. We are enjoying reading The Jungle Book together. They have started to bring some extracts home to share with you. We have been describing the animals, now we are using adjectives to describe the setting. We watched a video of a walk through the tropical forest and listened to the sounds we could hear. There was a mixture of opinions when they described how they thought they might feel if they were alone in the forest!
In maths, we have been solving problems using a mixture of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This will continue to be our focus over the coming weeks. Please continue to help your child with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
The children are beginning to recall facts about India such as the capital city, surrounding countries and India being part of Asia. Next week they will compare daily life in India with their own routine.
Please keep reading, every little helps!

We have had a great week working on adjectives, describing the characters and setting of our class text. The children have all worked hard towards their writing targets. Next week we will continue with our story, writing out the main events and adding detail.
In maths we have been learning how to make and add equal groups. We have done this using patterns in egg boxes and bun trays. This is ready for our work on multiplication.
All of the children enjoyed our dip and dipper testing afternoon on Thursday and some were very surprised at the dips they actually enjoyed. We will be designing our own dips very soon.
Your child has come home with a piece of card to make a crown to wear for the Coronation afternoon. They can bring their crown into school from Wednesday next week.
Enjoy the weekend
