Good afternoon,
We have started our unit on decimals this week in maths. We have been looking at tenths as fractions and decimals and understanding tenths on a place value chart. We have also found tenths on a number line and divided a 1-digit number by 10.
In English, we have been planning and writing our historical story. We are continuing to work on reading our work back and editing and improving.
This half term we are looking at Judaism in RE. Today we found out about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Our Golden Certificate winner this week is Lilly. She has settled in well and become a great member of our class. Well done!
Please keep up the reading, mathletics and times tables at home.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Fairclough and Mrs Brunyard
At last, the sun is shining! However, the children still need waterproof coats so that they can go out to play at every opportunity. PE is on TUESDAYS and WEDNESDAYs only. We appreciate all of your efforts with correct uniform, the children look so smart when they arrive at school. They may look a little different when they leave but they’ve had a fun filled day of learning! As the weather gets warmer they are more likely to take off their jumpers and cardigans. PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY HAVE NAMES IN THEM SO THAT THEY CAN BE RETURNED TO THE RIGHTFUL OWNER!
The children have really enjoyed this week’s book, ‘The Weather Monster’. They have written descriptions of Ron and created their own Weather Monster to describe.
In maths, we have been measuring mass by using cubes. It is important that the balance scale is level when we measure mass accurately. Next week, we will be measuring capacity and volume.
On Thursday, it is World Book Day. Everyone is invited to dress up as a character from a book. Please do not feel the need to buy costumes, there are some great ideas for simple homemade costumes on the internet.
Have a fab weekend,
Mrs Dowell, Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Dowell.
Good afternoon,
The children have shown a great attitude towards their writing this week, they have thought about an ending to the story and how it links back to previous parts of the book. This week’s Golden Certificate winner is someone who has particularly excelled in their writing – congratulations Issy.
In maths we have started looking at area and perimeter, and will be moving on to volume next week. If you have any free time over the weekend, some quick fire multiplication questions would be very beneficial. In geography we have continued to look at weathering and erosion and have applying our understanding to coastal features. In science we have explored what actually is in our blood and the roles different parts have.
As always please encourage daily reading, it really does make a difference.
Hope you all have a great weekend,
Mr Reynolds, Miss Nicholas and Mrs Davies
Hey!
Happy Friday, had a lovely week this week. We have been super busy learning lots of new things and starting to spread the excitement for World Book Day next Thursday. On Thursday, the children can come dressed as their favourite character from a book they love.
In Maths, we have been looking at mass. We have learnt about grams, kilograms and how to balance mass using scales. In English, we have continued our work based on our new book Einstein the Penguin and have written postcards pretending to be him getting in touch with his family back in Australia. The children really enjoyed learning about the sites of London that he has seen on his adventure. In Science, we are looking at Scientists and Inventors. This week we met Elizabeth Garratt Anderson, the first female Doctor! A lot of the children couldn’t believe that men did not like women being Doctors. In History we compared teachers from today to teachers from the Victorian Era. All of the children said they were glad to be children in 2024 and not children in 1824. In Art, we have practiced our skills with water colours and reminded ourselves of the primary and secondary colours.
PE – Monday and Tuesday. Please can we remind you that PE kit needs to be worn on both days, white top, dark top and bottoms with no large logos. Hair needs to be tied up and earrings need to be taken out. Thank you.
We are really trying to encourage the children to read more and see the pleasure within getting lost in a book. Can you please be encouraging your child to read at home. It does not have to be a school book. It can be a magazine, a recipe, a newspaper, a book from their own collection and it can be read to anyone in the house.
Well done to Bailey and Stanley who went away after the assembly on Monday and found out all about famous women of History. Both myself and Miss Roberts were very impressed with the efforts they had made to find things out outside of the classroom.
Finally, well done to Maddie for winning the Golden Certificate this week and well done to Declan for winning it last week!
Have a lovely weekend!
Miss Shadbolt and Mrs E 🙂
The end of another week already and what a lovely Spring day it turned out to be!
This week our book was Jasper’s Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen. The children have been drawing and writing about the main character Jasper and had some fantastic ideas about what they thought might be at the top of the beanstalk he grew. Fairies, unicorns, friends, castles and princesses to name a few but my favourite was the cotton candy van that gave away free cotton candy! Yum!
They have also really enjoyed exploring different types of seeds and planting their own sunflowers. We have also sown some cress to see how much quicker it grows than our other seeds.
In Maths we have been learning more about 10 and have been working on finding and recalling bonds to 10. Today some of the children were even exploring 3 or 4 parts – so 2 and 3 and 5 or 2 and 3 and 3 and 2!
In Phonics we are continuing to consolidate our knowledge of the Phase 3 sounds and tricky words and have been looking at longer words with double letters e.g. butter, bigger, dinner, shimmer and they even read the word fan-tas-tic brilliantly! Well done to those who managed to read their reading books five times this week and earn a dip in the lucky dip box. We are aiming for fluency so each book must be read at least three times before it is changed. If you are logging on to the Collins Ebooks that are available to them, please just record this in their reading record too! Thank you.
Just a reminder that PE is on FRIDAY only until Easter. Children should be in their PE kits on this day. Trainers should only be worn on PE days.
Next week we will be learning about animal lifecycles and will be reading the book The Ugly Duckling. We have already had some discussions about what sorts of creatures hatch from eggs and which animals give birth to their young, but will be looking more into different lifecycles next week.
It is of course World Book Day on Thursday, so we look forward to seeing who the children decide to come to school as and hearing all about their favourite book characters. There will be a little surprise in store for the children and I am sure it will be a wonderful day.
Hopefully this afternoon’s sunshine will stay a while! Have a lovely weekend!
Miss Jones & Mrs Kenny
This week, the children have really enjoyed our book ‘The Jamie Drake Equation’ and have used this to write character descriptions on an alien of their choice. They have worked extremely hard to ensure they include fronted adverbials, powerful adjectives and parenthesis to make their writing interesting.
In Maths this week, the children have mastered rounding decimals to the nearest whole number, ready to progress onto next week, where we will look at more rounding and understanding percentages.
This afternoon has been a great opportunity for the children to practice their pastel blending skills through the style of the famous artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. His work is very abstract and includes many patterns, which the children have used to inspire them to create their skulls today. Please see photograph below:
Our Golden Certificate Winner this week is Theo for his amazing work in Maths! Well Done!
Please remember it is World Book Day next Thursday. Year 5 do have PE in the afternoon, so please make sure costumes/footwear are appropriate.
Have a great weekend!
