It has been lovely to see all the children again after the Easter break and catch up on their news. On the first day back we had an exciting letter arrive from a deep-sea diver called Dillon with a box of objects to explore that he had found. The children were very excited and have enjoyed exploring the objects and the information books to learn more about the sea and some of the creatures that live there. They have also written some fabulous letters back to Dillon to thank him for sending us the box and also ask him about things they would like to know more about. They have also been drawing and writing about their favourite sea creature.
In Phonics we are revisiting some sounds that our end of term assessments showed the children needed further consolidation of so they can recognise them in words more easily and continue to build their fluency. Please remember to record in your child’s reading record each time they read with you. They should be able to sound out and blend the words in their book the re-read the sentence so they know what they have read. Books should be read at least three times to develop fluency and comprehension. If they find reading the whole book in one sitting challenging, aim for just a few pages. Just a few minutes each day can make all the difference.
This week we also introduced our new handwriting scheme – Kinetic Letters – and have been learning about the importance of being “strong for writing”, engaging our ‘powerpacks’ (core) and holding our pencils correctly. As part of this we have been practising different Animal positions to help build their strength and develop their posture so they can adopt an effective writing position. There will be more information coming out to you about this over the coming weeks.
In Maths we have started our new unit exploring numbers beyond 10 and have been learning how all the numbers between 10 and 20 are ‘one ten’ and something and learning the correct number name for that e.g. one 10 and 3 is thirteen, one 10 and 5 is fifteen. The children have been exploring this by making the numbers using cubes, blocks and counters on a ten frame as well as reading the numerals.
PE continues to be on Fridays. Please ensure children come to school wearing their kits and with earrings removed as per school policy so they can fully participate in our gymnastics sessions this term. Thank you.
If you have any non-urgent queries, please feel free to email me on the class email beech@crowmoorschool.co.uk or catch me on the playground after school.
Enjoy the Spring sunshine!

Hazel Class Weekly News 12.4.24
It has been lovely to have all the children back at school after the Easter break.  Everyone is full of enthusiasm for the summer term.  Already we are enjoying our new class text -‘Treason’.  It is a challenging read, but the children love a challenge!  This week we have been writing our own setting descriptions about the beach from our text.  The children have worked hard to edit and improve their sentences.  In Maths we have been adding, subtracting and partitioning fractions.  In Science we have been looking at the parts of the body and how we can keep ourselves healthy.
PE this half term is on Monday and Wednesday.
Please remember to read, read, read!
Enjoy the weekend

Good afternoon,
I have been very impressed with the children’s attitudes as they have returned to school. They have settled quickly into our algebra unit in maths and have produced some great poems in English. One child who has started particularly well this week and has produced a great poem, and is this week’s Golden Certificate winner is Tim – congratulations.
Also this week, we have started a new history topic on Ancient Greece; as well as a new science topic, exploring scientific explorers and inventors.
Today the children have brought home a booklet where they need to complete the first two sections (A1 + A2) and bring back to school for Wednesday. The aim of this is to build the children’s confidence around comprehension and ensure they are being exact with their answers.
I hope you all have a restful weekend,
Mr Reynolds, Mrs Davies and Miss Nicholas

Welcome back for the Summer term! Only this term to go until the children are in Year 6!
We have made a great start to this week though looking at angles in Maths. The children have found out the different types of angles, classified them and even practiced measuring them using protractors.
In English, we have made a start to our debate writing. We began by looking at a debate, which was trying to persuade the BBC to create a Match of the Day programme for women’s football. We picked this apart and discussed the persuasive language being used. This week, we have written a debate about whether children should have to wear school uniform. The children came up with some great ideas, whilst using rhetorical questions to address the reader and keep them hooked. Next week, we will be developing our debate writing skills and posing the question ‘Should animals be kept in zoos?’.
In the afternoons, we have started our new topic on Ancient Maya. We kicked off the week by looking at the continents North and South America and narrowing down in Central America where the Mayans lived.
Our Golden Certificate this week is Karla! She made a fantastic effort to find the Mayan cities and locate these on her map in Geography and History. Well Done Karla!
Have a great weekend

What a busy spring term we have had! The children have worked hard to retain facts that they have been taught in all their subjects. They have enjoyed learning about Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands. We researched about hot and cold countries including what it is like to live there. Their knowledge of wild and garden plants is growing and we will continue our work about plants into next term. As the weather warms we will be planting lots of flowers, fruit and vegetables.
Everyone’s reading is improving as we develop our phonic knowledge. Phase 5 is quite tricky as there are lots of ways to make the same sound. Our group reading sessions use books and resources from Little Wandle. On Thursdays, children will bring home a copy of the book that they have read in class that week. They must return this the following Thursday in order to take home the new book. We have a limited amount of books so we need to take good care of them. They will continue to bring home a matched Phonics Bug book to support their reading. This can be changed more regularly than once a week. We encourage children to read a book more than once to develop their fluency. Ask your child to read out loud as if they are performing. This will improve their expression and reading to the punctuation. Not all children need to point to each word any more!
The children have really enjoyed the variety of books that we have studied in our English lessons. They love listening to stories and pretending to be the characters in our Hot Seating sessions! Some of the questions and answers are very original and they are having to improvise a lot more.
In maths, they are beginning to multiply by making equal groups and then using repeated addition to find the total. Most children can count forwards in 2s, 5s and 10s. However, all need more help to do this backwards!
Over the Easter break, please start to introduce your child to o’clock and half past using a clock with hands. Most of the clocks we see around our homes are moving to digital: Alexa, phones, tablets, microwave… we still need to learn how to read the time on an analogue clock!
