Those first four days of the summer term flew by in a flurry of wind and rain! We have now completed our first full week and I’m really pleased with how the children have settled into their learning. We have also been revisiting facts from our previous topics to make sure those facts have stuck!
This half term, our reading texts have the theme of powerful women and girls. We started with Gretel rescuing Hansel from the cage he was captured in and disposing of the witch. This week we have read ‘Amazing Grace’ which is about a girl who was told that she couldn’t be Peter Pan in the school play because she was a girl and black. This made her even more determined to get the part and impress all her friends who doubted her. I can’t give you a preview of next week’s book as I like it to be a surprise for the children, they really love discovering a new book each Monday!
In maths, we have started to look at fractions and to talk about half. We know that when a whole is split into two equal parts, those are called halves. We have found half of objects, shapes and quantities. Next week we will learn about quarters.
In between the rain, during our science lesson, we have finally planted some seeds ready for the summer. The children are making observations of their seedlings and are looking forward to potting them on as they grow. We have planted sunflowers, nasturtiums, pumpkins and beetroot. Later on we will plant lettuce and radish. As a continuation of our Seasons and Weather topics, we have installed a rain gauge outside the classroom. I am sure there will be no shortage of rainfall for the children to measure!
Yesterday, most children will have brought home a copy of the Little Wandle reading book which they have read in class. Please support your child and let them show you the progress they are making. This book needs to be returned on the following MONDAY ready for a new book to be issued on THURSDAY. School have invested a considerable amount of money on these new resources so it is very important that they are returned in good condition and on time. Each book is numbered and is allocated to a specific child. Children will continue to bring home other reading books matched to their phonic stage. These can be changed more often. Thank you for your support.
PE continues to be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There are still some spaces in our Key Stage 1 Summer Sports after school club on Thursdays. If your child is interested, please contact the office for a form to be sent home.
Even though it can be sunny at times, it is still quite cold outside at the moment. Please make sure your child has a coat to wear so that they are comfortable playing outside should it be a bit damp.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs Dowell, Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Savory
Good afternoon,
This week we have finished our decimals unit in maths. We have been looking at comparing and ordering decimals, rounding to the nearest whole number and looking at halves and quarters as decimals. In our writing lessons we have been looking at character descriptions and how we can use fronted adverbials, emotive sentences and expanded noun phrases in our writing. We looked at adjectives to describe Ariki from our class text ‘Ariki and the Islands of Wonder’ then tried to write a character description of Ariki.
Our Golden Certificate winner this week is Ben. He has been working hard to edit and improve his writing this week and taken on feedback given. Ben is always eager to learn, tries hard and wants to produce his best work in all he does.
Yesterday, the children really enjoyed making circuits in our Science lesson and this afternoon we have continued to look at how we can edit images by changing the colour in our computing lesson.
As the weather is starting getting warmer and children take off their jumpers and cardigans, can you please make sure your child’s belongings are named so if any are misplaced they can quickly be returned. Thank you.
We hope you have a great weekend.
Mrs Fairclough and Mrs Brunyard.
Good afternoon,
This week we carried out mock SATs with the children to help them understand the process and what the actual week will look and feel like. I have been very impressed with how mature the children have been and how hard they have tried.
In maths we have continued to explore algebra and in English we have written instructional texts to help people new to technology get on their emails. There has been some very good discussion in PSHE around emotions and feelings, with lots of them showing how well they can relate to others.
One child who has worked incredibly hard this week and is our Golden Certificate winner is Jay – congratulations.
The children have bought home their reading comprehensions to complete and please keep encouraging them to use Mathletics, SPAG.com and to read.
Hope you all have a great weekend,
Mr Reynolds, Mrs DAvies and Miss Nicholas
This week in English, we have expressed our views on whether animals should be kept in zoos. We have produced some great arguments and backed up our points using evidence that we have researched.
In Maths, we have continued our unit on shape. We have looked at how to calculate the angles in shapes using our knowledge of angles around a point and on a straight line.
In History, we researched the 6 main Mayan Gods. We found out their names, what they are a God of, the meaning of their name and any interesting facts about them. The children were fantastic at making links to our end of the day story.
Our Golden Certificate Winner this week is Noah. He has made some excellent improvements in his handwriting this week. Well done!
Have a great weekend!
Miss Hipkiss and Miss Davies
The next meeting is Monday, 6.15pm. All welcome 🙂

It has been lovely to have all the children back at school after the Easter break. Everyone is full of enthusiasm for the summer term. Already we are enjoying our new class text -‘Treason’. It is a challenging read, but the children love a challenge! This week we have been writing our own setting descriptions about the beach from our text. The children have worked hard to edit and improve their sentences. In Maths we have been adding, subtracting and partitioning fractions. In Science we have been looking at the parts of the body and how we can keep ourselves healthy.
PE this half term is on Monday and Wednesday.
Please remember to read, read, read!
Enjoy the weekend
