Measles
Cases of measles are increasing in the UK, including in the West Midlands, and it’s likely that there will be cases in Shropshire soon.
Measles is a viral illness that can be serious and sometimes fatal. Spending 15 minutes with someone with measles is enough to get the virus. Symptoms of measles include high fever, runny nose, cough, red and watery eyes, small red spots with a bluish-white centre inside the mouth. A rash can appear later, usually on the face, upper neck, hands and feet, fading after 5 to 6 days. If you’ve not been vaccinated against measles, you can be at risk, but it’s most common in young children. Someone with measles can spread the virus up to 4 days before a rash appears, and up to 4 days after.
Measles can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences, so make sure you and your children are up to date with MMR vaccinations and ask your GP about catch-up jabs if needed. The MMR vaccine is highly effective at protecting against measles.
If you are unsure if your child is up to date with all their routine vaccinations, you can check their Red Book (personal child health record) in the first instance. If you are still not sure, or if you need to bring your child up to date with their vaccines, you should contact their GP practice to check and book an appointment.
If you are concerned that your child has measles, please call your GP in the first instance, to reduce the risk of passing the disease to others in the waiting room. More information on measles can be found here and information on the MMR vaccine can be found here .

Our first full week has flown by, reading the story “Kipper’s Snowy Day” by Mick Inkpen and drawing and writing about our favourite part.
In phonics we have learnt four new sounds ‘ai’ like rain, ‘ee’ like ‘sheep’, ‘igh’ like light and ‘oa’ like goat. The children have been working on their blending skills by sounding out each word before blending to read it then reading the word again to build up their fluency.
In Maths we have learned about zero and have been learning to represent numbers to 5 in lots of different ways as well as recalling the different ways to partition each one.
As part of our learning about What is Cold we have been talking about the seasons and how the weather and environment change during winter. We have talked about our own feelings about and experiences of snow and enjoyed exploring the ‘snow’ in class, making prints like Kipper from the story with the people and animals.
We have also been talking about where we live and looked at maps of the UK and the world, identifying the coldest parts of the planet and learning about some of the creatures who live there.
Just a little reminder that PE is on MONDAY and FRIDAY until February half term so children should come to school wearing suitable kit please. Please also remember they should have their book bags and reading records in school every day. If they are missing anything please let us know and we can arrange to replace them. It is so important that children are practicing their reading skills daily so they can become confident, fluent readers.
Have a lovely weekend,
See you Monday.

Good Afternoon Everybody,
The children have thrown themselves into their learning this week. I have been particularly impressed with their understanding of ratio.
We have also started our Science unit on light, our Geography unit on trade and our History unit on Anglo-Saxons, Scots and Vikings.
The winner of the golden certificate this week is somebody that has not only tried hard but has also improved their handwriting: Congratulations Kayden!
Just to confirm our PE days for this term are on a Thursday and a Friday so children will need to be in their full PE kits on those days.
Please keep up the daily reading at home – it really does make such a difference! If there is any extra time remember to log on to Mathletics.
Hope you have a great weekend,
Mr Reynolds and Miss Nicholas

Hi everyone!
What a lovely week we have had in Elm class. I am so proud of how well the children have settled in and have shown great positivity towards myself as their new teacher. They all work super hard and I am really enjoying teaching in Elm. They have also been very receptive of our new ‘Good to be Green’ behaviour chart.
In Maths, we have finished our topic on Money. We have looked at how to give change, add different amounts and even looked at two-step problems. Next week we will be moving on to Multiplication and Division.
In English, we have been reading the Twits. The children have loved listening the story and have had fun writing expanded noun phrases to describe them! We all agreed that sentences with more description are much better to read than boring short sentences.
In Science we have looked at Living, Dead and Never Alive. The children really enjoyed categorising the items and discussing the life processes that makes them alive. In History, we explored the life and influence of Florence Nightingale and what she did for Nursing. We could not believe how much she did in her life. Some of the children said they would like to be nurses and paramedics as they liked the sound of caring for others.
PE – Tuesday and Thursday (please see the letter that was sent home with your child this evening regarding uniform and PE kit).
Parent’s evening slots are filling up quick so can you please return the letters ASAP to avoid not getting your desired time.
Remember, if you need to reach me please email: elm@crowmoorschool.co.uk and I will get back to you.
Finally, BIG WELL DONE to Charlie, who was the Golden Certificate winner this week. He has worked super hard and made good choices when faced with new learning challenges. Keep it up Charlie!
Have a fabulous weekend! Remember to READ READ READ!

The children are growing in confidence each week in swimming. Today, the children showed off their acting and swimming skills to be casualties and lifeguards. Next Friday (19th), is Year 4’s last swimming lesson. Please can they make sure they bring their swimming kit and coat.
Our Golden certificate winner this week is Alissiya. She has shown fantastic perseverance this week. Alissiya has shown her perseverance when swimming and during her times table practise, where she kept having a go at the test and wanted to better her score each time.
This week we have been looking at newspaper reports in English. We looked at an example text and found features of a newspaper report. We then went over the features we needed to include to plan and create a class newspaper report.
Parents evening letters were given out on Wednesday. Thank you for all the slips that have already been brought in.
We hope you have a great weekend.

Wow, what a busy full week back! The children have enjoyed reading the book ‘Puss in Boots’. They have used adjectives in sentences to describe the main characters. We are working hard to make sure all our sentences start with a capital letter and end with a full stop in the correct place.
In maths we have been adding and subtracting within 20. They have been counting on to add and counting back to subtract. Today, we explored doubles of numbers to 10. Next week we will use doubles to add ‘near doubles’.
In science we have started our topic about animals including humans. We have recognised some animal groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. Next time we will look at features of each group and sort animals correctly.
This afternoon the children have enjoyed making sculptures of their hands using salt dough. We were so busy that I forgot to take photos! Their sculptures are drying over the weekend and we will finish them off in the oven if needed.
I have had most Parent’s Evening slips back, please check your child’s bag and let me know if you have not had one.
Please keep reading,
Mrs Dowell, Nrs Armstrong and Mrs Savory.
