Elm Class Newsletter 20.10.23

Another week has flown by in Elm class. In English this week we have read the story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper. In the first two days we have been working on reading and comprehension, answering questions about the text. The rest of the week we worked on writing informal letters from the characters in the story, practising writing questions using the correct punctuation.
We continue to work on securing Phase 5 sounds in phonics and building fluency when reading.
In maths we have continued our unit in addition and subtraction and over the week have been working towards adding ten, then more than one ten and today we were adding two digits (not crossing a ten). The children have been working hard on building their knowledge of number facts, bonds to 10 and fact families to help improve their fluency and understanding.
We completed our ‘Uses of Materials’ science unit this week. The children really enjoyed learning about the inventions of John Macadam, Charles Macintosh and John Dunlop and discussing all we’ve learnt this term about the suitability of materials for making particular things.
In art we looked at the work of Metzinger and the children all created their own fantastic landscape pictures which you will be able to see at parents evening on Monday or Tuesday. Next week they will be creating their pictures in mosaic to end our Art unit.
I look forward to seeing you at Parents Evening – thank you for returning the slips so promptly. Hopefully you’ve all had your return slip with your allocated time on but if not, please let me know via the class email – elm@crowmoorschool.co.uk and I can let you know.

Have a lovely weekend. Hopefully the rain won’t stay too long!

Chestnut Newsletter 20.10.23

Well, what a wet day it has been! All the children had coats which is fantastic, thank you. We do try to get out side at breaktimes as much as possible, they really need a run around to let off some energy.

This week the children have enjoyed reading The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson. It is a book that most of them know well. This has been the stimulus for our writing. We have written descriptive sentences to create a WANTED! poster. You will have the opportunity to look at their books on Parent’s Evening.

In maths we have learnt about fact families and represented them using addition and subtraction sentences. The children are all getting confident at identifying the ‘whole’ and the ‘parts’ in a Part/Whole model. They know that we add the ‘parts’ together to find the ‘whole’ and that we always begin with the ‘whole’ when subtracting. Here is an example of a fact family:

5 + 3 = 8

3 + 5 = 8

8 – 5 = 3

8 – 3 = 5

We have looked at Black History Month and discussed how everyone is unique but there are some things that link us together even if we look different. We will be learning more about Black History throughout the year.

In art the children enjoyed creating Andy Warhol style self portraits. They were very brave with their use of colour and repeated patterns.

We hope you enjoy the weekend and I look forward to seeing you all at Parent’s Evening,

Mrs Dowell, Mrs Armstrong and Miss Harrison

Beech 20.10.23 – Newsletter.

Another week has flown by! Time really does fly when you’re having fun and we have lots of that in Beech class.

We have been busying segmenting and blending in phonics this week. Encouraging the children to segment each sound and then blend them back together to read the word. If you can also encourage your child to do this at home and write down you’ve done this in the reading diaries we would be super grateful!

In English we have looked at the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. The children have loved drawing naughty trolls, magic bridges and inventive ways to cross the poisonous river. The children are all trying so hard with pencil grip and letter formation. Very proud of their efforts this week.

In Maths we have been looking at 1,2 and 3. Seeing how they are made up, what things can be grouped into 1,2 and 3 and looked at varying representations of the numbers. We have started to subitise (The ability to look at a small number of objects and instantly recognise how many objects there are without needing to count). The children have all shown good subitising skills.

We have been celebrating Black History Month. This week we looked at Alma Thomas and Sir Frank Bowling (famous artists) – we looked at lots of their paintings and then had s go at recreating them. The children really enjoyed getting artistic and have shown great understanding of the different methods used.

Well done to Arlo who is our “Golden Certificate” winner this week.  Arlo goes above and beyond to be helpful in class, always tries his best and is really trying to segment and blend new words! Well done Arlo – well deserved this week.

Looking forward to seeing you at parents evening on Monday and Tuesday.

Have a nice weekend, let’s hope the rain stops and if not lots of splashing in puddles in wellies!
Miss Shadbolt, Mrs Kenny and Mrs Millichamp.
