Elm Class Newsletter 20.10.23

Another week has flown by in Elm class. In English this week we have read the story Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper. In the first two days we have been working on reading and comprehension, answering questions about the text. The rest of the week we worked on writing informal letters from the characters in the story, practising writing questions using the correct punctuation.
We continue to work on securing Phase 5 sounds in phonics and building fluency when reading.
In maths we have continued our unit in addition and subtraction and over the week have been working towards adding ten, then more than one ten and today we were adding two digits (not crossing a ten). The children have been working hard on building their knowledge of number facts, bonds to 10 and fact families to help improve their fluency and understanding.
We completed our ‘Uses of Materials’ science unit this week. The children really enjoyed learning about the inventions of John Macadam, Charles Macintosh and John Dunlop and discussing all we’ve learnt this term about the suitability of materials for making particular things.
In art we looked at the work of Metzinger and the children all created their own fantastic landscape pictures which you will be able to see at parents evening on Monday or Tuesday. Next week they will be creating their pictures in mosaic to end our Art unit.
I look forward to seeing you at Parents Evening – thank you for returning the slips so promptly. Hopefully you’ve all had your return slip with your allocated time on but if not, please let me know via the class email – elm@crowmoorschool.co.uk and I can let you know.

Have a lovely weekend. Hopefully the rain won’t stay too long!
