Welcome back everyone! It has been great to see all the children enjoying the sun. Let’s hope it continues. Please make sure everyone has a water bottle in school everyday and a sun hat. Unfortunately, they will still need at least a jumper or cardigan as it can still be quite chilly in the mornings.
This week we have been concentrating on our phonics in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check next week. This will be carried out by myself and is a routine that the children are already familiar with. They may have already told you about ‘Alien’ words, please don’t worry, we still have our feet on the ground and have not had any strange visitors!
In maths, we have been consolidating our addition skills by using a number line to add ones and tens. Next week we will be subtracting. Very soon the children will be learning how to tell the time on an analogue clock. Have you got one at home? Most clocks that we see are digital!
KS1 (Chestnut and Elm) Sport’s Day is on Tuesday 18th June at 10.30am. This has been on the school website since back in September so I hope most of you will be able to make it. Pupils will need to come to school in their PE kit as usual. They do not need a coloured t-shirt if you don’t have one, please do not buy one especially.
Over the half term, our class pumpkin plants have been eaten by slugs. Does anyone have any established pumpkin or courgette plants that they would be willing to donate to our class vegetable patch?

Beech Weekly News 24.05.24
We have had a super week reading the book ‘Sharing a Shell’ by Julia Donaldson. They have done some super writing about what makes a good friend and have been working on their rhyming skills by writing their own rhyming strings.
The have also been learning about rock pools and other animal habitats and what the difference is between animal homes and habitats, and created some fabulous rock pools in the craft area using their own choice of resources.
In Maths they have been consolidating their knowledge of number patterns, identifying odd and even numbers as well as doubles.
In phonics they have continued building their confidence with reading longer words and have also learned the tricky words here, were, little and says. They have also completed some phonics assessments so we can continue to work on any gaps from previous phases. Lots of children have found remembering tricky words from Phase 3 difficult so we will continue to work on these when we return after half term.
Please try to read with your child as often as possible and record in their yellow reading record so we can ensure their books are changed regularly.
We hope you have a lovely half term and look forward to seeing the children back on Tuesday 4th June for our final half term.

Another half term has come to an end! Only one more half term to go until the children are officially in Year 6!
Today has been a sad day, saying goodbye to Miss Shadbolt! She will be missed by all and all the children showed their appreciation for her today. We wish her all the best of luck in the future!
Our Golden Certificate Winner this week is Taylor! He has shown FANTASTIC effort in Maths when working with decimals and his hard work has paid off, as he received an AMAZING score in the end of unit test! Super well done!

Hazel Weekly News 24.5.24
This week we have been reading and writing persuasive texts. We have also had some debates to help with our writing. In maths we have been learning about angles and turns. We have been doing investigations to see who can jump the furthest and why we think this is. Hazel class have had a great week and have also made sure they have been using our vocabulary box.

Happy Friday!
This week we’ve been looking at informal letters in our writing sessions. The children have been working on using questions and apostrophes for contractions (e.g can’t), in their writing. In Maths, we’ve been looking at multiplication and division.
The children enjoyed making switches in our science lesson. We talked about the job of a switch and used one in our circuits. In design and technology, we’ve looked at attachment techniques ready to help us design our bridges.
Our Golden Certificate winner this week is Reggie. He’s been trying really hard and making good choices. Well done!

Beech Class Newsletter 17/05/24
We have had a great week this week continuing our underwater theme and reading the story ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ by Sarah Roberts, who is a wildlife expert and animal behaviourist.
The story is all about ‘Stanley’ who is actually a stripy plastic carrier bag, and what happens to him (and some of the sea life) when he ends up in the ocean. We have been discussing what we can do to reduce the amount of plastic we use and how we can help keep our oceans clean and save the sea creatures. Here is some of their fantastic independent writing!
They have all been very enthusiastic about the topic of recycling, sorting some of our ‘rubbish’ by type and talking about the things we can and can’t recycle. They created some great turtles, dolphins and fish using recycled egg cartons.
They’ve also thoroughly enjoyed reusing their own ‘Stanley’ to make a kite (like the boy does at the end of the story, although we didn’t quite have enough wind to see if they would fly well before it started to rain! Don’t forget to look on Tapestry to catch up with what we have been up to.
In Maths they have been learning about sharing and grouping, making sure each group is equal. We will continue to work on grouping, odd and even numbers and will also revisit doubling next week.
In Phonics the children are continuing to work on reading longer words using the sounds they already know and they are trying hard to read with greater fluency. We hope you are enjoying hearing them read their Little Wandle books from their previous week’s group read. They have already read this book in school 3 times so were excited to take them home and show you how brilliantly they can read them. They do also have their phonically decodable Bug Club book to practice reading with too.
Please don’t forget to record in your child’s yellow reading record each time you read with them. If they read at home at least 4 times in a week, they can choose a special prize from the special Lucky Dip box.
