We end the penultimate week to this half term. It has been a good week where we have started our new Literacy topic; we are now looking at journalistic writing and in Maths we moved on from multiplication to division. We looked at symbols in RE and in IT we reviewed our online safety knowledge. We planned an investigation in Science and will carry this out soon. Several children are representing the school next Thursday in the Athletics Competition; a reminder that it is Harvest Festival on Tuesday and a PD Day on the Friday. Parent’s Evenings are the first week back; I look forward to meeting you then. In the meantime have a great weekend.

We are now 6 weeks into the term – I can’t quite believe it. We had our last swimming session on Friday at Shrewsbury School and the children had a great PE lesson, with the coach, that looked very energetic and fun. I have reminded the children about bringing their PE kit into school and if they forget I will ask the office to inform you so you are aware. I think it is imperative that all children carry out PE, unless of course there is a reason not to participate, as it acts as a superb release and it can allow children to use a number of cross-curricular skills. There is a Cross Country Competition next week (Friday pm) and some children in class have been asked to represent the school – please ensure your child return their slips to confirm attendance.
In Maths we have really honed and revised how to multiply – division next week and in Literacy we concentrated on Grammar and comprehension activities. We learnt about refraction in Science and continued with our river study – we learnt about meanders and Oxbow Lakes.
It is our Harvest Festival rehearsal next week and the actual Harvest Assembly Service at the Church a week on Tuesday – the school is supporting the Ark again so please donate what you can to such an important and fantastic voluntary organisation.
Have a great weekend.

Week 5 draws to a close and we have been busy as usual. In Maths, we looked at the functions and we moved onto Multiplication yesterday. We continued our Literacy Explanation study and the children are in the process of finishing off the unit with an explanation of a volcano. We learnt about the varied and interesting history of the Abbey and the children wrote a diary entry about their fictitious visit at a point in time that interests them. We discussed keeping safe online and the importance of being vigilant. Earlier on in the week we learnt about the anatomy of the eye, we now understand how we see and the children completed a group loop activity about light.
Have a great weekend.

The highlight of the week had to be Tuesday afternoon when the children had a PE lesson with 4 Shrewsbury Town players and a coach. They played Dodgeball and I think all, without exception, really enjoyed the very active session.
In Literacy, we have looked at how we can write a scientific explanation and in Maths we completed our Place Value study and have moved onto the Four Functions.
We had the elections for Head Boy/Girl and their Deputies. The speeches were good and I was impressed with the childrens’ confidence – speaking to nearly 200 children can be daunting for a 10 year old! The roles were announced in Assembly on Friday – well done to all that put themselves forward.
In RE, we looked at what the Abbey is used for and in PSHE we learnt about Democracy; an appropriate link to the voting of the Head and Deputy positions.
In Science, the children learnt how light reflects and next week we will learn about refraction.
Have a super weekend.
Homework for Autumn Term
Hi Parents/Carers and Members of Willow Class
Please find the attached homework options. Your child should know what to do. The homework was given a week last Friday and isn’t due in until the beginning of the next half term (early November).
Copy of homework below…
The children can select an area of interest (that links to our topic for the half term) and the idea is they produce an output that provides POWer points. The more POWer Project points the better but a minimum of 5 is the expectation. They can choose any option and more than one from each POWer point value box.
The homework might fit in their books, if so please encourage them to stick it in to avoid it getting lost. They may make a model, if so this will not fit in their book but can be displayed in the classroom for all to enjoy. If they create a minecraft settlement they could take screen shots and attach them to a document to add to their books.
The homework should interest the children, they choose how they engage with it; it follows the line of a project as opposed to a set piece of work.
In the event of query please ask your child or alternatively catch me at the end of the school day. Please also see the Parent/Child Guide to homework that your child has stuck at the front of their homework book.
Thank you for supporting your child.
Kind regards
Mr Wilmot

The weeks seem to be progressing at quite a rate. The children have settled into Y6 very well and I have been impressed with the way in which they have taken to their responsibilities. We have had a very active week with two cross-country training sessions, an extended PE session with the sports coach and our second swimming session at Shrewsbury School. We extended our place value knowledge and in Literacy we learnt what a modal verb is; we also continued our ‘explanation’ unit. We have looked at the course of a river and completed our reading assessment – ZPD colour bands to follow. The children have been given information on how to apply for Head Boy or Head Girl and are probably in the process of writing their manifestos. Voting next week after presenting in Assembly – details to follow! Have a super weekend.

Another busy and eventful week. In Literacy, we started our ‘Explanation’ Unit and so far have looked at the key features of this genre and how to effectively write notes. We will move onto writing explanations next week. In Maths, we have continued our ‘Place Value’ Unit concentrating on rounding and comparing numbers; numbers in the tens of millions! We discussed the water cycle and continued with our Art relating to a river scene. On Thursday, the children had their photos taken and on Friday we went to Shrewsbury School baths for our first swimming session. The children will go swimming again next week and on Monday they will have and extra PE session with Mr Edwards (Cross Country). Homework has been set – it relates to a project for the term; your child should be able to tell you what part interests them and what they hope to concentrate on. Have a good weekend; I believe it will be a warm one!

It has been a super week. The children should now feel welcomed back and very much an integral part of the school and new members of Willow. I will assign responsibilities to the children next week – I know they are eager to get started! It has been a week of setting the scene and a few assessments to ensure I place the children in the correct groups and to allocate resources. We have started our place value topic in maths and in literacy we have looked at grammar, we have written a piece of writing about some Meerkats and a poem about a castle we have studied. We start our term’s ‘Wild Water’ topic next week and the children will have an associated homework project that relates to this. I will also send out the spellings early next week for the children to learn prior to their test in the subsequent week. Please remind your children to read each night and continue practising their multiplication tables. In the event of any query please do not hesitate to contact myself via the office or at the end of the school day on the playground. Have a great weekend.

The year is almost at an end. The children look forward to a long break before starting at their respective Secondaries. We have completed our SRE program and the children are more confident with the changes they can expect in puberty. We carried out a fun, electric DT project and the class performed ‘Alice’ to the school and yourselves. I was very proud of their contributions. The play was spectacular and your children excelled again. Reports were sent out with the SAT results – that marked the end of a very busy year. The children were a credit to you and the school and I have enjoyed working with them. We had a great day on Wednesday when we walked to Shrewsbury School, swam and enjoyed a McDonald’s in the Quarry. The children will share their memories in their final assembly tomorrow and at 3:15pm they will leave the school – I appreciate what a momentous event this is. Having said that they are welcome anytime to come back and visit. Thank you for your support over the year; I’ll sign off now – wishing you all a fantastic Summer.
