Elm Newsletter 13.2.23

The children have all settled into the spring term. We are enjoying our new topic and learning lots of new facts and vocabulary. It’s also great to see the children linking the new learning to their existing knowledge. Facts we learned about the environment and climate change last term are important to our understanding of the Polar Regions and the significant explorers. It also allows the children to think about the habitats which are at risk from changes in the world’s climate.

We have completed our unit about money and will be moving onto multiplication and division. Please continue to support your child in learning their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. They are all able to log in to Times Tables Rock Stars. This will help with their fluency and speed of recall.

I hope that you saw the post that I put up of the sculptures we made on Wednesday, we had great fun! I have also asked the children to bring in some clean recycling materials to make a ‘Rubbish Monster’ on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to seeing them use their imagination. I will post photos to keep you updated.

If you have not sent back a signed permission slip for the trip, please send this in as soon as possible. It is a great educational visit and links very closely to the work we are doing in science and literacy.

Spelling scores are improving across the class and this is great news. Please keep reading little and often it makes such a difference.

Sycamore Spring Topic Web

Our topic this term is ‘What have we learnt from the Egyptians?’. We will be learning all about the Egyptians and the river Nile, including the water cycle. In Guided Reading our class book will be ‘There’s a Pharaoh in our Bath!’ by Jeremy Strong.

Elm Class Art 11.1.23

Today we have made salt dough sculptures of our hands we looked at some of the sculptures of Marc Quinn. He uses lots of different materials: ice, flowers, plastic, bronze… even bread dough!

Let’s hope they look just as good when they come out of the oven!

Oak Class Weekly Newsletter 6.1.23

Welcome back!

We have had a super start to the term in Oak Class.

In English, we have started a new instructions unit, where the children have made great links to what they have previously learnt about instructions. We will, eventually, create some instructional directions on how visitors and new children can find Oak Class.

In Maths, we have started to look at multiplication and division again. We are now developing our mathematical skills and have begun looking at multiplying 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers and 2 digit by 2 digit. Impressive!

Unfortunately due to illness, we were unable to start our ‘Read the Game’ programme this week, so we this will commence from next Thursday (12th January). PE will remain on Thursdays too, so correct PE kit is required: white t-shirt, plain dark hoodie or school jumper/cardigan, plain dark jogging bottoms or leggings and trainers or pumps.

Our Golden Certificate Winner this week is Willow! She has shown great efforts towards her learning. She read multiple times over the Christmas break and has come back with a great attitude to learning. Well done Willow!

Sycamore Class Newsletter 6.1.2023

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a great Christmas. Thank you for all the Christmas wishes, cards and gifts we received.

We have had a short but busy first week to start our Spring Term.
The children all thoroughly enjoyed their first Swimming lesson in Year 4 this morning. Our Golden Certificate this week goes to Theo who tried his best to swim, and persevered even when finding it hard. Well done Theo!

Our Topic this term is Ancient Egypt and the children have brought home today their homework for this half term. In Literacy, we created questions we want to know about Egypt and have looked at the process of mummification. In Art, we followed instructions to make salt dough to make our Egyptian Scarab Beetle Amulet.

In Maths, we have been continuing our multiplication and division unit. We have been learning factor pairs of a number. The children have been enjoying doing our cracking times tables. Remember to keep practising those time tables at home.

In PSHE, we have been talking about the Rights of the Child. Ask your child if they can tell you about all the rights they know.

Elm Class Newsletter 6.1.23

Welcome back everyone, there have been a few tired children (and staff) in school this week! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

This term we need to focus our attention on the children’s reading. We read each day in school but this cannot take the place of daily 1:1 reading with an adult at home. This time is so valuable; it builds good reading habits and a life long enjoyment of books. I have stressed to the children that they are not expected to read a whole book every night, one or two pages is enough. Little and often is much more effective than reading a whole book once a week! Please help your child with this as much as you can and record this in their yellow Reading Record.

The children know what to do when they get stuck – use their phonic knowledge. If they have to stop to sound out a word then they need to go back and re-read the sentence again and again until they can read it without stopping. They need to be fluent readers.

So far we have enjoyed sharing the new topic books about the Polar Regions and learning new vocabulary: tundra and climate. We have also been reading about Ernest Shackleton and his Antarctic expedition on a ship called ‘Endurance’. The children were fascinated watching the digitally remastered footage from the actual expedition. Although, they couldn’t understand why there was no sound with the video! They were relieved to find out that everyone was rescued and got home safely.

We have started to count money in maths. If you have any odd coins available, please support your child in counting the value of them. Ask them to find a specific amount using the most efficient way. Could they use a 20p coin instead of two 10p coins?

This term, PE will remain on Tuesday: white t-shirt, plain dark hoodie or school jumper/cardigan, plain dark jogging bottoms or leggings and trainers or pumps.

The children need to be a full school uniform on the other days.

Hazel Class Newsletter 6.1.23

Hello everyone,

Firstly, welcome back after the Christmas holidays. I hope you all had a wonderful time! It has been great to welcome the children back after the break and settle back into school.

This term we have lots of exciting learning planned linked to our new topic ‘What have we learnt from the Egyptians?’. Topic Web ‘What have we learnt from the Egyptians’ 2023

This week, we have enjoyed continuing our multiplication and division unit in maths. We have been learning about multiples of 5 and 10 and looking at related calculations in multiplication and division.

In Literacy, we have started our new unit on instructions. We have learnt about the mummification process and have ordered a set of instructions about this process.

In art this week, we made scarab beetles out of salt dough by following some instructions.

Your child will have come home with a homework sheet this week. You can find a copy of this on the Hazel Homework page if you need one.

Well done to this weeks golden certificate winner Queenie, for her wonderful Scarab beetle made from salt dough in art.

This term P.E is on Wednesdays.
