The children are continuing to work hard with their swimming and it’s been great to see their confidence in the water grow. The weeks have been flying by, and it’s our last week of swimming next Friday.
In English, we’ve started our new unit, Explanation texts. We’ve been looking at examples and features of explanation texts and using conjunctions.
In Maths, we’ve been looking at division. The children have been dividing a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number with and without remainders, and dividing a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number.
The children had a fantastic afternoon creating puppets and puppet theatres to perform the poem ‘Caterpillar’ by Christine Rossetti using shadow puppets.
Our certificate winner this week is Darcey. She is a great member of our class and takes an active role in our class discussions, where her contributions are well thought out.
We hope you have a nice weekend.

What a lovely week we have had continuing our learning about penguins and other polar animals. As one of the things the children wanted to know was where penguin babies came from we watched part of a documentary/film called Snowchick where we saw a chick hatch from an egg that was cared for by the father whilst the mother penguins were out gathering fish to feed the chicks on their return. The children enjoyed pretending to be penguins, carrying their babies on their feet whilst they tried to waddle around. They have also loved looking at our penguin information books and finding out what toy/model penguins we have in our small world penguin play area.
In Drawing Club we read the story Penguin by Polly Dunbar and have been creating food for the lion to stop him eating penguin, finding ways to rescue penguin and designing places to hide from him. I particularly loved the ‘brick suit’ idea so Ben and penguin could just hide in front of a brick house but look like the bricks!
In Maths we have met Numberblocks 6 and 7 and have been looking at all the different ways the numbers can be made and represented as well as ordering them correctly. We have been working a lot on the children’s reasoning so asking them HOW THEY KNOW it’s a particular number or WHY that number should go there to ensure children have a good understanding of number order and structure and don’t just recite/recall.
In phonics we have learnt four more sounds and three tricky words. These have all been added to their sound card bags for them to practice. The children are finding some of the digraphs quite tricky so a little practice each day will help with this.
Please remember to record in your child’s yellow reading record when you read with them at home so we know if their book needs changing on a Tuesday or Friday. If they have 5 or more recorded reads in a week they will be able to choose a prize from the lucky dip box. Well done to Ayla, Tommy, Piper and Isla-Grace who have all read five times this week. 🙂
Have a lovely weekend.

What a fantastic time we had at Sealife on Tuesday! All the children were very well behaved even though they were quite tired by the afternoon. We looked at the photos that were taken and wrote a recount of their personal experience. Thank you again for the contributions.
We have completed our non fiction writing about the Polar Regions. The children have learnt lots of factual and scientific vocabulary about the animals and habitats. They have also researched ocean, rainforest and hot desert habitats.
In maths, the children are enjoying their work on multiplication and division. This is helped greatly by their instant recall of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables facts. Please continue to help them as much as possible. They are starting to use multiplication facts to solve division problems. If I know 5×3=15 then I know that 15÷5=3.
We have used the large boxes to create abstract sculptures of people in the same way that Barbara Hepworth does with bronze, stone and wood. I am really pleased with how the children remember each artist from the previous weeks.
Please continue to read little and often. I have challenged some of the class to read chapter books rather than picture books. They need to build up their reading stamina so that they can read longer texts in preparation for the Key Stage 1 SATs in May. I will continue to monitor this and to make sure that they are challenging themselves!
Thank you for your support, have a great weekend.
