Happy half term! We have had a great few weeks enjoying our Polar topics.  We have finally completed our letters to Felicity Aston and a select few have been sent to her.  We hope to have an answer to our questions next half term.  We will be writing our own stories when we get back to school, so make sure you read each day and get some ideas.

in maths we have been using counting on and back to find the difference between numbers.  We found this tricky to begin with but are gaining confidence constantly.

Please help your child to practise their phonics using the sound mats we sent home earlier in the week.  This will really support them during our phonics check next term.

On Thursday 2nd March it is World Book Day.  Your child can come to school dressed as their favourite book character.  We look forward to seeing all of their favourites. The costume does not have to be shop bought.  We enjoy seeing home made costumes and the delight the children have in making them. You can find lots of ideas online.

This week we have been learning how to write letters.  We have learnt about the features of letters and when people write letters.  We have decided to write to Felicity Aston, a famous Polar explorer.  We have lots of questions we would like to ask her about her solo expedition across Antarctica.

We have made sculptures using cubes in the style of Brendan Jamison.  He used sugar cubes to make his sculptues.  We had lots of fun making sculptures of schools, hotels, towers and football grounds.

In science we were thinking about our senses and how they help us to understand the world.  We went outside on a listening walk and decided that when we were outside we were using all of our senses.  We could hear the birds and cars.  We could see the trees and other children.  We could feel the cold air and breeze.  We could smell someones cooking and we could taste the fruit we were eating while we were enjoying our walk.

Your child will bring home a new sheet of  real and alien words to practise sounding out and blending.  Please help them with this.

What a busy week we have had and a trip too! We have completed our penguin fact files and will be bringing them home to share with you tonight.  We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we have enjoyed learning about penguins.  Some of the sentences we have practised as a class and others we have written independently.  We have great knowledge about penguins and it was lovely to see them on our trip.

At the Sea Life centre we saw lots of different fish and sea creatures.  We were treated to a lovely time by the otters, who were playing and showing off to us.  We had a fantastic time walking through the tunnel, watching the rays, sharks and the giant turtle swimming around us.  We were able to touch the star fish in the rock pool and crawl through the clownfish tunnel.  All of the children were very well behaved and we are proud of them.  Members of the public commented on how polite and sensible they were!

Each child will come home today with a page of real and alien words to practise sounding out and blending to read.  For example w-ai-p = waip.  Please help your child with this activity and practise throughout the week.  We will send another set next Friday.  Incase they are lost here is the sheet.

This afternoon we have been making sculptures using plastic spoons, elastic bands and cups in the style of Jill Townsley.  We had great fun, but it was a little frustrating too!

This week we have been busy finding out fascinating facts about penguins, ready to write our fact files next week.  I am sure we will find some more out at the Sea Life Centre too!  Ask your child for a Fact and be prepared to be amazed!

We are using our number facts to 10 to help us work out caluclations within 20.  We have been playing lots of counting games and hit the button to help us.  Have a go if you can.

Wow! Christmas break already.  This term has flown by and we have had so much fun in Year One.  It was lovely to see so many of you at the Christmas Carol Service and I am sure you will agree the children did a great job.

This week we have been busy enjoying Christmas, making cards, having a disco and a special visit from Santa himself!

Well done to the children in Chestnut and Elm classes for their wonderful performance of Santa’s Setbacks.  They all worked hard to learn their lines and the songs. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed performing it.

Alongside the performance we have still been working hard on our English assessments and in maths practising our number bonds.  In readiness for Christmas we have been reading our favourite christmas stories and have a Christmas role play area in the classroom.

Next week we will be continuing with writing in sentences, remembering capital letters, spaces between words and full stops.  I am sure this will include letters to Santa.  We will also be concerntrating on taking away and fact families in maths.

Enjoy the weekend- wrap up warm and please ensure your child has a suitable coat for school next week.
