The weather has certainly changed this week! Another busy and productive week. In Maths, we have learnt how to efficiently multiply decimals and in Literacy, we studied non-chronological report writing and focused our attentions on creating a class report about Christmas. We listened to recordings of soldiers who experienced ‘The Christmas Truce of 1914’ and wrote diary entries reflecting on the soldiers and their feelings. We completed our anti-bullying posters in PSHE and we have learnt how to accompany/enhance our ‘Silver and Gold’ song. Have a super weekend.

Well done to all the children that took part in the Bikeability course. All passed and were a credit to the school. The instructors were impressed with their cycling and listening skills. We continued with our reasoning skills particularly with prime, squared and cubed numbers and multiples and in Literacy we revised the features of a non-chronological report. In History we learnt about the ‘1914 Christmas Truce’ and in PSHE we learnt more about climate control. It is National Anti-bullying Week; we spent a little time discussing what bullying is, what different types there are and what we can do if we experience it. A busy but successful week. It was great to meet so many parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. It was a chance for me to meet you and celebrate your child’s success and to tell you where I plan on developing their skills further. If I haven’t seen you and you would like an appointment please speak to me on the playground or contact the office and we’ll make a mutually convenient time to meet. We enjoyed a folk concert on Tuesday and on Thursday the children all contributed in the planting of new trees around the large playing field. We looked at the role of animals in WW1, in History, and the causes of global warming in PSHE. In Maths, we started our division unit and in Literacy we concentrated on grammar skills. A busy week! The end of the first term, where have the weeks gone? It has been a productive and enjoyable term. In Literacy, this week, we studied various types of short poems and in maths we revised multiplication. We have progressed our WW1 topic and spent a time looking at women and their imperative role on the Western Front. It is Parent’s Evening on the Tuesday and Wednesday, when we return after half term, I hope to meet you then with the purpose of celebrating your child’s work. Have a great week.

The highlight of our week has to be Monday’s visit to Acton Scott. Despite the weather, we all enjoyed stepping back in time and experiencing life on a farm. We learnt that although the farm is set in Victorian times it would have been the same until after the war and in some parts of the estate changes only came after WW2! Within school we have been assessing; this helps me ascertain where the children are in terms of their learning but it also helps me when focusing on planning curriculum content and timings. We researched the role of women in WW1 and will develop this thread next week. We also learnt about the relevance of Guy Fawkes and bonfire night. A quick reminder that it is our Harvest Festival on Monday afternoon. Have a great weekend.

We have completed our addition and subtraction unit in Maths and will revise multiplication and division next week. The children are in the process of completing their biographies and we will start a new unit, in Literacy, in the forthcoming week. We rehearsed our Harvest Festival on Monday and spent a few sessions preparing for our visit to the Abbey. The Open Book Event at the Abbey was superb – it was great to be in such a fascinating building. We have now completed our swimming sessions. We will be visiting Acton Scott Working Farm on Monday – I think it may be wet so please ensure your child has a coat and suitable footwear (I will be taking wellies). Have a super weekend.

Those that completed and shared their Manifestos and applications for Head Boy and Head Girl did a fantastic job; the children across the school (from Y2 to Y6) voted for their chosen representatives and the elected children were announced in Assembly on Friday. Well done to every candidate; I was particularly impressed with their confidence, the standard of presentations and speech content. We’ve had another busy week; in Maths we have revised subtraction and looked at problem solving involving measures and time and in Literacy we continued our biographic studies. The children are in the process of researching their chosen hero/person they respect with a plan to creating their own biography next week. We are visiting the Abbey soon and have spent a little time researching it’s use and what it means to people in its parish. It’s starting to feel Autumnal; with this in mind please ensure your child remembers to bring their coat into school. It’s our final Swimming session next week. Have a great weekend.

We are now a month into the school year – I don’t know where the time is going! We have started a new topic in Maths – addition and subtraction and in Literacy we recognised features of a biography. Our WW1 study is progressing well and we have looked at what life was like in the trenches. Our School Council representatives have been selected and the children in Willow, interested in representing the school as Head Boy or Girl, are writing their manifestos. We will hold an election next week after spending a little time in PSHE discussing the idea of democracy. Have a super weekend.

Another great week, the class have settled into Y6 really well and we have introduced new class routines. We started our Guided Reading Programme and the children have spellings to learn in preparation for their test next Monday. The children completed their homework and the maths challenge returns folder is looking full. We have continued our theme of WW1 and, wherever possible, the links have been cross-curricular. Swimming started this week and will continue for another four weeks. We have an extra PE session planned in for Monday afternoons, until half term, so please remind your child so they remember their PE kit. I have put the class curriculum map on our class area, please have a scan when you get chance. It shows my intended curriculum coverage and content for the forthcoming year. Have a super weekend.

I welcome the children back to school. I hope you all had a fantastic and relaxing Summer. The children have returned invigorated and fully prepared for their last year at Crowmoor. We have spent part of the week baselining/assessing and learning new class routines. We started our history topic (WW1) and I look forward to continuing it next week. Our 5 week swimming programme starts next Friday and PE will take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Homework and the maths challenge go out on Fridays and spellings on a Tuesday with the test the following Monday. I look forward to the year ahead and meeting you all at the Autumn Term Parent’s Evening in November. In the meantime, please catch me on the playground if you have any queries.
