We are all getting in the Christmas spirit – we decorated our baubles for the tree at St Chad’s and we investigated the different Christmas traditions around the World. The spellings this week also relate to the Yuletide theme! We completed our half termly assessments this week and the children are aware of their scores. The fair tonight will raise some money and it will be fun – see you there! Have a fantastic weekend.

What a chilly week! In literacy we devoted some time to researching our non-chronological report content and in maths we progressed our fraction knowledge. We looked at problems involving fractions, how we can order them and convert using common denominators. In science we learnt about electrical symbols and notation – we will continue with this next week and look at making circuits using equipment. We briefly discussed our DT ‘Bridges’ topic and will develop that in the final fortnight of term too hopefully. Have a super weekend.

This week has gone so fast. We have continued with our non-chronological report unit and in maths we looked at problem solving and fractional amounts in context. In Science we reminded ourselves about the dangers associated with electricity and in IT we revised the rules of online safety and how we can protect ourselves. It was the last swimming session today (24.11.17); the children won’t need to bring their swimming gear into school next week. The children all now have lockers, apologies for the delay in giving the keys out – I put them in a safe place then temporarily forgot about them! Have a super weekend.

Another busy week! In Maths we have progressed our knowledge of fractions, particularly equivalents and fractional amounts and in Literacy we have learnt about and highlighted the features found within non-chronological reports. We started our new Science topic and the children have learnt about electrical safety; we progress to circuits and symbols shortly. We have our penultimate swimming session this week; last session next week. Hopefully we have raised a lot of money for Children in Need; thank you for your donations. Have a great weekend.

It was good to catch up with so many of you this week at the Parent Consultation Evenings. If I didn’t get chance to see you please make an appointment, after school and at your convenience, with the office. We have spent some time this week reflecting on the importance of Remembrance Day and the children have written some poignant poems. We have progressed our division skills in Maths and in Science we have written evolution or adaption stories following the influence of Ruyard Kipling’s ‘Just So’ stories. Have a super weekend.
Willow (Y6) Maths Calculation Policy
The teaching of the functions has changed quite considerably over the years. Your child might well use a different strategy when completing/answering calculations. To help/assist I attach a link to our (Y6 specific) Calculation Policy.

It was great to welcome the children in Willow back to school after a super half term break. We welcome Alexander to the class and I thank all the children for helping him settle in so well. The children enjoyed a further Belvidere Science Workshop – this time we mixed chemicals to create controlled explosions! We continued our poetry topic relating our ideas to Halloween and Bonfire Night. In maths we revised multiplication and division. I look forward to meeting you all next week at Parent’s Evening. In the meantime have an enjoyable bonfire weekend.

I can not believe we are 7 weeks into the term and it is half term already. The week has been dominated by Head Boy and Head Girl preparations, nominations and whole school voting. The successful candidates were informed in Assembly today. I was proud and impressed with the work that the children put into their presentations. In Literacy we have looked at alternative forms of poetry and in Maths we have continued with subtraction. A highlight of the week also has to be the Bird of Prey presentation; the children learnt some great facts and some had chance to hold a kestrel. Have a fantastic and relaxing half term.
‘Floating Gardens’ Science Workshop
In Bangaldesh the farmers have had to adapt their farming techniques due to flooding. The crops die when they are under water so they have made pontoons that are approximately 1m by 8m. These pontoons float when the water rises and they are layered to ensure they are as stable as possible. The farmers grow all sorts of crops on them. In some instances you will see livestock on the pontoons when they float but you need to be careful they don’t eat all the crops!
At Belvidere we ‘pretended’ we were scientists and engineers and we were given the task of creating a model that floats, has stability and will take a given weight. Our pontoons had to measure 20cm x 20cm max. We had half an hour and lots of resources. After our time we tested the floating gardens in a test tank. Mr Applegate (Belvidere Science Teacher) added weights and recorded the results. He ensured the test was fair and that each raft fulfilled as much of the criteria as possible.
Results Table
Team | Did it float? | What weight could it hold? |
1 | Yes | 700g – 2nd |
2 | Yes | 500g |
3 | Yes | 600g – joint 3rd |
4 | Yes | 800g – 1st |
5 | Yes | 600g – joint 3rd |
6 | Yes | 500g |
7 | Yes | Disqualified – model was too large and it clamped to the side of the tank |
Willow Homework
The children will usually be given one piece of homework per week. It could be related to what we have learnt that week in Literacy, Numeracy or it could be topic related. Nearer the SATs the frequency of homework will increase. Your help by encouraging your child to complete homework on time would assist me greatly. Thank you.
