What a busy week! Monday morning was move-up so the children spent the whole morning in their new classroom with Mrs Dowell and Mrs Armstrong, getting to know each other and having a little time to find out what it will be like to be in Year 1 in September.
In English this week we have looked at the story ‘Snail Trail’ by Ruth Brown, talking about perspectives (how everything seemed enormous to the snail but would be quite small to us) and then making up their own little stories about an adventure the snail could have gone on. They have made some super mini-story books which will come home at the end of term.
In Maths we have been learning to solve problems using addition and number facts, reading the books ‘How Many Legs’ by Kes Gray and ‘One’s a Snail, Ten’s a Crab’ by April and Jeff Sayre. The children had great fun making up their own silly scenarios e.g. how many legs would there be if an octopus and an ant came to tea? as well as trying to make numbers in different ways – e.g. 1’s a snail, 2’s a person, 4’s a dog, 6 is an insect, 8’s a spider and 10 is a crab – how can we make 12? 3 dogs, 2 insects, 6 people, a spider plus a dog! They loved finding all the possibilities!
As we have been learning about minibeasts this half term we also learned about bug hotels and used some of our recyclable materials to create our own ones to see what we can attract in our outdoor area.
The children have also enjoyed crafting minibeasts and creating split-pin creatures too.
Next week we are reading Oliver’s Fruit Salad and we are planning on making our own fruit kebabs so please let me know if there are any allergies. Thank you.
Have a lovely weekend.
