Our story this week has been The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle as we have started to think about changes and transitions and how the children feel about moving to their new class in September.
The children have learned about the life cycle of a butterfly, comparing it to other lifecycles we have previously learned about such as plants/seeds, frogs, chicks and humans. We have watched videos of caterpillars spinning their chrysalides and the butterflies that emerge from them and explored pictures of different caterpillars and butterflies, trying to match them together. The children have also created some fantastic artwork over the week, making their own caterpillars and butterflies in the craft area to contribute to this fantastic class display with the sunflowers they made a few weeks ago.
In Maths we have been learning about manipulating shapes, using them for a purpose and rotating them to create a range of shape pictures. They have also learned about Tangrams and used the shapes from a tangram square to create a number of different minibeast and animal pictures.
Monday is the whole school move-up morning where the children will be spending the morning in their new class. They will register in class as normal in the morning and return to Beech class as normal after their lunch break. If you have any queries about this please email me on the class email beech@crowmoorschool.co.uk
We hope you have a lovely weekend and don’t forget to keep reading!
Miss Jones & Mrs Kenny
Good afternoon,
It’s been great to see the sun this week. Please make sure that children bring water bottles and sun hats into school, and suncream has been applied before coming into school. Please also make sure jumpers and cardigans are names, so if they are misplaced they can be returned quickly. Thank you.
This week we started our unit on position and direction in maths and have been looking at co-ordinates. The children have been describing positions using co-ordinates, learning how to plot co-ordinates and draw 2D shapes on a grid.
In our writing sessions, the children have been planning and writing a diary entry from the perspective of Jim Jarvis from our class book ‘Street Child’. One child who showed a good understanding of features of a diary entry was our Golden Certificate winner Alfie K. He is a also great role model to his peers and always listens well, tried hard and contributes well to class discussions.
Please can any trip letters be returned as soon as possible. Children need to wear school uniform as normal and will be back for the end of the school day.
We hope you have a great weekend.

Good afternoon,
We have had another busy week in year 6. The children have continued to plan their theme parks and work out the costs and hopefully the profit. We have rehearsed our production a few times; please keep encouraging the children to practise at home and make sure they are speaking loudly.
One child who has done particularly well in these two areas this week and is our Golden Certificate Winner is Ryan – congratulations.
We have also adventured more into our coding unit using microbits; this week some children have managed to create step counters. In art the children have pulled all of their painting skills into one final piece.
I hope the children who have their move up days next week have a great time and I look forward to hearing about it on their return.
Hope you enjoy the Summer Fair tomorrow,
Mr Reynolds
In Maths, we have completed our unit on volume, where the children have distinguished the difference between volume and capacity and put this into real life contexts.
In English, we have focused on writing relative clauses to upgrade our sentences to make them more interesting for the reader. We have then used these in the context of describing a tropical island from our book.
Our Golden Certificate Winner this week is Jake K. He always tries his hardest to achieve his best in everything he does. He is a fantastic role model to his peers ready to move up to Year 6! Well Done!
Have a great weekend. Hopefully see you all at the Summer Fayre tomorrow!

What a busy week we have had!
As part of our learning about Mary Anning, we made fossils on Monday using sand and Plaster of Paris. We spent Friday afternoon carefully excavating them with a soft brush to reveal the finished product. It was great fun!
In science we used our sense of smell to choose our favourite plant from our sensory garden. We recorded this information in a pictogram.
In maths we have been learning to tell the time using o’clock and half past. Most children are becoming very good at this. Please keep practising at home!
I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Summer Fair, let’s hope the weather is kind to us!
Mrs Dowell, Mrs Armstrong and Mrs Savory
