These weeks are going so fast! Although, it seems like we have been together as a class for a lot longer. Most children are really settled and are adapting well to the higher expectations of a Year 1 curriculum. It’s hard work but lots of fun learning new knowledge and skills.
We had great fun on Thursday finding out if foil is waterproof – luckily no one got wet! We have been learning the properties of materials: hard, soft, rough, smooth, opaque, transparent… and lots more. Please talk to your child about items around the house and the material they are made from. What do they feel/look like?
Maths has been tough this week. All the children can talk about greater than > and less than < when comparing numbers, but they still need practice to draw the correct symbol, it’s a tricky one! Next week we will be ordering numbers and learning how to use a number line to help us with maths.
Next week is a big week for Phonics. At Phase 5, children learn alternative graphemes for sounds introduced in Phases 2 and 3.
-ay as in play
-ou as in cloud
-oy as in boy
-ea as in treat
Please keep reading at home, just a little and often makes a huge difference to their fluency. The children need to read a word, sentence, page and book more than once until they can read it without stopping to sound out.
In geography, we will be looking at different types of houses in the area. Does your child know what kind of home they live in? Is it terraced, semi-detached, detached, a bungalow, a flat…? They will have the opportunity to design a home for Travelling Ted. To build their home, they will need to collect some items for junk modelling. Cereal and other small boxes – nothing too big please! These can be brought into school over the next week ready for our lesson on Monday 2nd October.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs Dowell, Mrs Armstrong and Miss Harrison.
