Welcome to Elm Class, it’s been great to see everyone after the summer. All the children have settled into class really well and are getting used to the new routines and higher expectations. I can see that there will be some very tired children by the end of the week!
We have already decided on our Class Charter after agreeing that we would like a kind, friendly and fun classroom. Next week the children will be voting for their School Council Representatives and UNICEF Ambassadors. We have lots to do and the children enjoy lively discussions, everyone can express their opinion.
This term’s topic is called ‘Who are we?’. This will include learning about the history of World War 1 and the animals who helped. We will learn what it means to be British. Please look out for our topic web on the Elm Class Information page.
Throughout my time at Crowmoor it has been a great pleasure to teach and get to know so many families of siblings and cousins. I try my best to not confuse their names but inevitably I sometimes slip up and get corrected just as quickly as when I mix up my own daughters’ names!
I enjoy teaching Key Stage 1, their enthusiasm and thirst for learning new things is second to none. We have so much planned for this term and the coming year. Hopefully, we will be able to invite you all in to watch a live Christmas performance for the first time in two years. It’s always a special time in their school year.
On Wednesday, we produced some art using primary colours which was based on the work of Piet Mondrian. This will be the first piece in their new Sketch Books. Next week the children will be mixing their own secondary colours.

The children have started to explore a Museum Box of artefacts from World War 1 and written questions. Next week we will begin to read a new story based on characters from that time.
In maths, we are working to understand the importance of place value. They need to know the tens and ones in two digit numbers and be able to compare them using ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’. By the end of Year 2, children are expected to know the 2, 5 and 10 times tables off by heart and out of order. We begin this by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Please help them with lots of repetition.
All children will benefit from reading to an adult at home everyday. They will also have spellings to practise each week. These will be based on the phonics and spelling patterns that we have been learning during the week.
PE will be on MONDAY AND TUESDAY UNTIL HALF TERM.
PE kit needs to be a plain white T-shirt, dark blue or black jogging bottoms and trainers. Their jumper or hoodie also needs to be plain dark blue or black. If these are not available, children should wear their school jumper or cardigan.
Unfortunately, children wearing earrings cannot take part in PE. They must be removed either by the parent or child before 1pm.
Thank you for your continued support. I’m looking forward to seeing you all officially at Parent’s Evening in the future but please feel free to introduce yourselves at the end of the school day. I’m always happy to have a chat.
Enjoy the weekend, maybe we’ll have something other than rain!
