It was lovely to have all the children back this week and hear all their holiday news. They have all settled back into routine and had a super week starting our new topic of 'Cold'
We started the week reading Kipper's Snowy Day, which has been quite appropriate with this recent cold snap of weather!
In Drawing Club, the children have done some super drawings of Kipper and of an alternative snow sculpture to the snowdog at the end of the story. They have been working hard on writing simple words and sentences about their drawings using the sounds they know.
In Maths they have been consolidating their knowledge of numbers 0 to 5, recognising the numerals, matching objects and exploring different ways of making each number.
We have been talking about the changing seasons and how our environment changes in Winter, including the weather, plants and other living things. They have explored frozen water in the mud kitchen and created winter pictures and winter clothes with a range of materials.
In phonics we have revisited the sounds 'ch', 'sh', 'th' and 'ng' and practiced blending sounds to read lots of simple words. We will continue to revisit some sounds next week and work on blending to ensure children are reading simple words confidently before we move to learning the new Phase 3 sounds.
Please remember to record in your child's yellow reading record each time you read with them or practice their sounds and tricky words. It is really important that children blend the sounds to read the word after sounding it out and for those reading sentences, that they re-read the sentence to ensure they know what it says. This will help them to recognise words they see frequently by sight and develop their fluency and comprehension skills.
