Beech Class Weekly News 17.01.25

Crowmoor Teacher

Our book of the week this week was 'One Snowy Night' by Nick Butterworth where Percy the Park Keeper has a number of animal visitors from the park seeking shelter from the cold snow. The children have really enjoyed drawing, writing and talking about the different animals and also came up with their own ideas of who else may come knocking!

As we talked about how we keep ourselves warm in winter, the children also explored different materials, identifying which ones would be warm and keep them dry, using great vocabulary such as waterproof and absorbent.

On Tuesday we found some of our small world woodland animals were frozen solid in ice and we had to work out the best way to free them. This led to us learning about hibernation, talking about animals in the UK who truly hibernate, as well as those who build up food stores for the winter or migrate to warmer countries.

In phonics we have continued recapping phase 2 with particular focus on improving blending skills. The children are improving every day, but benefit greatly from repeated practice at home as well as at school. This week saw the first lucky readers who could choose a prize from the lucky dip box by reading 5 times at home this last week. We will be doing this every week on a Friday when reading records are checked to see if books are ready to be changed, so please ensure you record each time they practice reading with their sound cards or read one of their phonic books.

Also, just a reminder that PE continues to be on Fridays. Children should attend school in PE kits every Friday unless you receive a message stating otherwise.

We have seen lots of lunchboxes coming in lately so it was great to see so many children having school dinners yesterday for our special menu. All children in Beech, Chestnut and Elm are entitled to universal free school meals, so it is always worth checking the menu to see if they may like to try a school dinner instead. More information and current menus can be found here: Meals | Crowmoor Primary

If your child prefers a packed lunch, you can find some great information about healthy lunchboxes here: Lunchbox ideas and recipes – Healthier Families - NHS

The children do have bagels available to them first thing and are offered a piece of fruit or vegetable at break time every day too.

If you have any non-urgent queries about your child's learning, please contact me on the class email beech@crowmoorschool.co.uk I am aware that Tapestry have introduced a messaging service, but this is not monitored, so please only use school email to contact us.
