English, Reading and Writing

English provides pupils with fundamental communication skills that are essential for personal, social and educational development. There are 3 distinct strands:
Speaking and Listening – To improve the quality of speaking and listening across the school lessons include drama, role play, story telling, story making and word and language games.
Reading – Pupils in the foundation stage and KS1 are taught phonics using the DfE Approved Systematic Synthetic Phonics Program ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’. The school has a wealth of decodable books to support your children in their early reading. Children are encouraged to read both in School and at home. We also use Accelerated Reader to motivate and challenge fluent readers. t
Writing – Pupils are given spellings to learn at home from an early age and are encouraged to write imaginatively using grammatically correct English, punctuation and neat handwriting.
