Wow, this week has gone fast but it seems ages since half term!
Thank you for taking the time to read your child’s Firework Poem, I know they were all very proud to bring them home. I hope you enjoyed sharing them and talking about the build up to their writing. There are still a few to come back, it’s not too late to send them in!
This week we have started out new literacy unit which is linked to our science learning about British Wildlife. We are ‘Writing to Entertain’ again. This time we are going to write our own book based on ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson. Some of the children have already read the abridged book but we are reading the full chapter version. There are lots of words we can ‘Magpie’ from the book to help us with our writing!
Our maths has moved onto addition and subtraction using the column method. It has been tricky but all the children have taken up the challenge and done very well for their first time using this method. It has highlighted the need for them to be fluent with addition and subtraction of single digit numbers when manipulating the columns. Please help them by asking them random questions such as ‘What is 5 add 3?’ or ‘What is 8 subtract 6?’. Once they can do this quickly they will find the harder calculations easier.
The children have been encouraged to wear layers of clothing under and over their school uniform and, of course, they can wear their coat if it is particularly cold. We’ve been lucky enough to have some sunny outdoor play this week which has been great!
We have been learning about Guy Fawkes and his plot to blow up the King and The Houses of Parliament in London. They were very interested in his story and a little bit shocked too!
The Government have stated that at some point during this half term, the children in Year 2 will take the Phonics Screening Check which they missed in Year 1 due to Lockdown. If you would like further information about this process then please contact me using the class email (elm@crowmoorschool.co.uk) You can find details of the Statutory Guidance here:
Please be assured that I will make sure your child is totally comfortable with the process; they’ve already had a practise using some past checks and we will be playing lots of games too! They know exactly what to expect and I will be the teacher administering the check.
Enjoy the weekend,
Mrs Dowell
