What a fantastic first week learning about The Gingerbread Man! The children are really enjoying getting to know the story really well through lots of role play and have been acting it out in their child-led learning time using small world resources outside and inside with masks, finger puppets and spoon puppets in our mini play theatre. They have also been ordering the story in Literacy and writing labels and captions for part of the story.
In Letters and sounds we have learned the tricky words ‘me’ and ‘you’ as they feature so much in our story. We are spending the next few weeks consolidating, making sure the children can blend confidently with the sounds we’ve learnt to read words and simple sentences. Please remember to record in their reading records each time they read a book (we always ask it is read at least twice – once for decoding and at least once for comprehension) or if they practice their sound cards. If they are finding it tricky reading their books you can use their sound cards to make words with three sounds to help them practice blending to read.
In Maths we started the week looking at one more and one less, again focusing on our reasoning skills and number order. Most of the children are confident now with one more but less (leading to subtraction) is always a little more difficult! We have also been looking at number bonds for numbers to 5. Next week we will continue to stay with 5 and looking more at the bonds using money as well as subtraction in greater detail, so the children can build up their knowledge of number facts and begin to understand the relationship between adding and subtracting.
Next week we will continue with the Gingerbread Man and will be thinking about how to change the story into our own unique versions so a little brainstorm of alternative characters over the weekend will be useful! Please don’t forget to keep checking in with Tapestry to see what the children have been up to. If you are having issues accessing it please drop me an email to the class email address beech@crowmoorschool.co.uk.
Have a lovely weekend! 🙂
