Well what an exciting time we have had for Science Week! We have been exploring and investigating materials, finding out which ones are strong (or not!) and could withstand being huffed and puffed on by the big bad hairdryer! We also found out which ones would withstand a large splash of sea water from the big bad whale from our class story. We have planted beans in various places to find out where they grow best and why they wouldn’t grow somewhere as cold as the North Pole (or the freezer!) and also explored what would happen to a picnic (containing chocolate and ice-pops!) if it followed the route Mr White and the penguins took from the North Pole, round the world via Europe and Australia to the South Pole. During child led we have explored making our own vehicles from a variety of construction and tested them on different ramps, finding out what makes them travel faster and slower. Our final big investigation was a very fun and messy one exploring how different liquids traveled down the ramps and if those liquids made the ducks travel faster or slower. We have all learnt a lot this week about lots of things and have definitely had a LOT of fun! You can see all our investigations on Tapestry.
Our maths this week tied in with Science and we were looking at weight, talking about how heavy and light materials were and then different toy animals. We used cubes weigh and compare them and the children have even been recording their measurements. They are even beginning to find the difference between them. We are really proud of how hard they are working! We have also been using a stopwatch to time how long it took for things to travel down the ramp and talking about who came first, second, third etc.
Next week, following the children’s current interests, and a majority vote we are going to be looking at the story Giraffes Can’t Dance and will be practicing a bit of rhyming alongside it.
Just a polite reminder to please send clothes in for Forest School EVERY Thursday. We do go out every week, in all weathers, unless you hear otherwise.
PE will continue to be on a FRIDAY. Please ensure children have their kits in school. They can be left in school on their pegs and just taken home in the holidays.
I look forward to seeing you all at Parents Evening next week. If you are unsure of your appointment time please contact the office. Have a lovely weekend. 🙂
